Student Sustainability Council

Student-funded capital improvement projects thanks to student support

The Student Sustainability Council (SSC) administers the Student Sustainability Fund, which provides funds to capital improvement projects on campus. This student-driven and student-run fund was created to facilitate positive, sustainable change on IU Bloomington’s campus. Past projects include: an energy-saving light system in Ballantine Hall, a rain garden in the SRSC, and a high tunnel at the campus farm.

SSC also leads the “Check the Box” campaign, which allows students to donate to the fund during course registration. Additionally, SSC seeks to serve as a network for all student organizations with an interest in sustainability—ranging from social and economic justice to the natural environment.

How do I Donate to the Fund?

Donating is easy, and for a $5 donation, billed to your bursar you can help leave a lasting legacy on campus. Simply go to One.iu.edu --> Student Center --> Enrollment --> Shopping Cart/ Sign-up for Classes --> select the Sustainablity Fund

SSC History + Membership

In the Fall semester of 2010, the dedicated members of the Student Sustainability Council realized a tremendous success—they collected more than 11,000 student signatures in support of a proposed optional student fee to advance sustainability initiatives on the IUB campus.

The council strives to represent the interests of the larger student body. To best achieve this goal, we work to foster an open environment of communication and collaboration between our member organizations, Sustain IU, and the broader IU administration.

Individuals (members at large) or representatives of other student groups (member organizations) may join SSC. Members have final say on council matters, resolutions, and funding decisions. As a member organization, you are expected to:

For member organizations, select one or two representatives who will attend all general council meetings;
Collaborate with the council and fellow members on common goals;
Communicate with your membership and provide feedback on council actions;
For member organizations, communicate back to your student group and provide feedback on council actions.

Applying for Project Funding

Below are a few details about how to apply for funding through the Student Sustainability Fund.

Any student, staff, or faculty member can apply to the fund. They do not need to be a member of SSC.

Capital improvements to campus (or, physical improvements). An education or marketing campaign would be ineligible. Labor for capital improvements are eligible, where agreed upon by Council. Past projects include an energy-saving light system in Ballantine Hall, a rain garden in the SRSC, and a high tunnel at the campus farm.

The award varies based on project proposals, and there is not a set amount distributed. However, SSC will only fund up to $20,000. Students can choose to fund 100% or less for any given project.

A project selection announcement will be made the second week of December, and shared through Sustain IU platforms.
