Goals & Progress

The overarching goal of the Energy and the Built Environment working group is to move the IU Bloomington campus towards the achievement of carbon neutrality.  The Office of Sustainability is working towards that goal through working groups and projects completed by its interns.

Complete the 2020 Vision Goals of the IU Office of Sustainability specific to the EBE:

  • Reduce overall campus greenhouse gas emissions by 30%
  • Reduce energy consumption in campus buildings by 20%
  • Reduce campus potable water use by 40%
  • Create a plan to phase out coal combustion on campus
  • Derive 15% of total energy use from renewable sources
  • Fully meter all buildings with smart meters and make utility information available to users
  • Implement an internal audit/re-commissioning team to provide for continuous improvement in building energy and resource effectiveness
  • Certify at least 20 buildings using the USGBC LEED for Existing Buildings. By 2020, new buildings shall be certified LEED Platinum.

Complete the recommendations laid out in the 2012 Integrated Energy Master Plan:

  1. Prepare to stop burning coal
  2. Implement energy conservation projects and continue implementing projects through Qualified Energy Savings Program (QESP)
  3. Repair the campus infrastructure: primarily the existing steam and condensate piping systems in addition to the steam traps on campus
  4. Continue requiring LEED certification for all new buildings
  5. Continue to monitor the economics of renewable energy technologies in new and existing buildings
  6. Encourage energy conservation through involvement of the campus community including behavior changes if necessary
  7. Create a system of tracking and accountability for the completion of the goals and recommendations made out in the 2020 Vision and the IEMP
Recent Progress & Accomplishments

  • Over the past years, IU has installed several small-scale solar PV and thermal systems totalling more than 45 kW, with the latest installation in March 2016.
  • Several buildings have achieved the LEED Silver Standard, with more construction projects on path to become LEED Gold certified.
  • The IU Energy Challenge continues successfully and has been expanded to semester-long challenges at selected residence halls.
  • In December 2012, the Indiana University Board of Trustees approved the Integrated Energy Master Plan and the EBE working group has started implementing many of the project recommendations. One of the largest projects that will begin this spring is repairing the campus infrastructure system by replacing the steam supply and condensate return pipes that run below ground.
  • The Utilities Information Group has completed the installation of 650 meters in buildings all over campus. This will allow for the monitoring and sharing of building energy usage with building occupants on campus, including forthcoming energy display dashboards in dorms and academic buildings around campus.
  • Members of the EBE working group partnered with two service-learning classes in the Fall of 2012. The results of that partnership were the beginning of an annual energy survey for students and also the creation of the Power Hour Event organized during the Energy Challenge.
  • As a part of the state-wide Qualified Energy Savings Project (QESP), Engineering Services has identified several buildings on campus that are in need of energy conservation measures with relatively low capital costs, but with strong energy savings.

LEED Documentation, Nathan Bower-Bir looked into the ways IU builds new buildings, assessing IU’s approach to the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) criteria, and addressing the question, “How can IU build better, greener buildings?”

Utility Conservation, Non-Academic Buildings, Gavin Merriman worked with the IU Utilities Information Group to develop an auxiliary building utility (gas, electric, and water) efficiency audit procedure.  In addition, he evaluated building efficiency upgrade options and identifed 15-20 IU owned facilities to be included in energy efficiency pilot projects.

Campus Energy Metric Development, John Miller worked with IU Engineering Services to conduct energy audits of four new mixed-use classroom/office buildings as a pilot for future Measurement & Verification credit as part of the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED certification system. In addition, he tracked proposed federal cap-and-trade climate change legislation and prepared a report outlining the legislation’s potential implications for the university.

Academic Year 2008-2009

Utility Conservation, Water and Energy, Rachel Weeks examined usage data for trends and inconsistencies, developing communication materials on water conservation and attempting to link trends in usage to implementation of conservation messages.

Utility Conservation, Auxiliary Departmental Buildings, Brian Wright analyzed of past utility consumption in auxiliary buildings. Brian formatted utility data into a useful form and establish priority areas for conservation measures.

Summer 2008

 Building Standards and Sustainable Design Practices, Melissa Enoch worked on revising IU’s building standards and performance to incorporate sustainable design practices. This work included tracking the LEED certification process for IU’s new Multi-Disciplinary Science Building- Phase II as well as work on energy savings projects at a number of IU’s regional campuses.

 Utility Data Display, David Roedl created an interactive public display to raise awareness about resource consumption across campus.• Greenhouse Gas Inventory, Summer 2008: Jonathan Bell developed a Greenhouse Gas Inventory for Indiana University-Bloomington. In addition to completing the inventory, he developed models to explore how IUB can reduce its carbon footprint.

Summer 2007

Energy Density Survey, Laura Kunz performed a web search of various universities that have accumulated data showing the energy density of different building types (academic office, academic research, athletic, residential, assembly, etc.). She then searched for the best European model of energy density and compare to USA standards and developed recommendations for new IU Energy Density Standard that models the global best-practice.

 Utility Metering Study, David Funte performed web searches for new products, contact references to determine effectiveness of the application, make inspections of various IUB buildings for recommended locations of meters. He then contacted other universities who run a utility enterprise and developed a list of contacts, accumulated information on the process those universities used to develop the enterprise, and reported the findings.

 Building Standards Survey, Melissa Enoch performed a web search of various universities and major research institutions that have developed building standards for high-performance buildings. Her specific interest was in building envelope and HVAC systems.
